This weeks illustration topic is - Beneath. I played around and came up with this idea. We were swimming in the river this past weekend and some of the pools are very deep...and I'm always thinking that we'll never know if something is down there, watching us.... :)

William helps me around the garden. He has such a good heart! He was very serious when I first photographed him...but I finally got him to laugh!
The light just worked beautifully on his face - catching the trim of his beard.

Phumzile is the lady who helps me out around the house. She is a real sweetheart and I will not be able to cope without her. I am doing portrait studies and asked her to sit for a photo.

Pets - Cats and Dogs

Photographer Seth Casteel from http://www.littlefriendsphoto.com/ inspired me to take more pictures of my pets! I have two cats, Roez and Miah, and one dog, Diesel - an Irish Terrier. Miah and Diesel are the best of friends. They sleep together almost every night on Diesel's bed. They bring so much joy to my life and I hope they feel the same. Here are some of the shot I took recently.

Diesel is our Irish Terrier. He is about a year and a half old and we share the same birthday! I have a companion, friend, guardian and a dog in Diesel! One of his ears is always standing up straight - its his trademark! He loves to socialize especiall with Miah (below) - he even shares his bed with her.

Diesel has two favourite games - to play ball and to play chase!
He can also do some fancy tricks! My favourite is when I point my hand like a gun and pretend to shoot him - he will lay down and roll over! It hillarious!

This is Miah. Somebody found Miah at a prison whens she was about 5 weeks old. They took her to my sister, Wilni, who is a vetrenarian. I just lost a cat, Assie, so my sister asked me if I wanted to adopt a new kitten. She was so young and we bonded immediately. Miah is about 8 months old now and she never leaves my side.

Meet Roez. She is my oldest pet. In Afrikaans the word 'Roes' means rusted. Roez has the most beautiful coat and the different shades of yellow, orange, white and black reminded me of rust.
During the day she gallivants around the farm and we hardly see her. But in the evenings she comes to snuggle up against us on the couch. Dirt bathing is one of her favourite activities...and unfortunately the second is sleeping on my percale bedsheet...
What I love most about Roez is the way she is ALWAYS talking to us. Sometimes she drives you nuts! She is a very social eater and meeau's until you go and shake her foodbowl...then she will eat. Both of my cats come running when I call them! I love them soooo much!

Ghost boat.
I did not have my tripod with me, but it would not have made a big difference anyway. The sea's movement created the blur. It gave the shot an ghostly feel...but I love it. Its dark and mysterious.

We were at Sodwana Bay this past weekend and we left early Monday morning. My family's home has a view of one of the lakes at Sodwana Bay. When we got up, the lake was covered with mist - you could not even see it...but it made such a good photo!

My husband's family own a sawmill. They have a lot of product waste that gets burned in the boiler. I've decided to use some of the plank off-cuts to paint on. Here are one of the quick paintings I did. I just love this old man's face - he looks so happy! Note: these paintings are done in proximately 20 min!
The background was done in Acrylic and the sketch in acrylic and ink.

This was a student project. We had to do editorial illustration. This specific article was about shark attacks on the east coast of the USA that caused a lot of fear and panic across the nation.
The reason I used glasses was in reference to the saying: "fear is in the eye of the beholder"

These are four images out of an illustrated diary called "Koos du Plessis". Koos is a very famous South-African Poet and song writer. His music and lyrics are very somber and thus I created a dark moody feel through my illustrations.

Panic attack

This little blue bird was for a short, illustrated book about funny vet stories (my sister is a veterinarian). This particular story was actually very sad. An old lady, who was very fond of her bird, came in to see my sister. My sister asked the lady to hold the bird while she was examining her. When my sister was finished, she told the lady she can let go of the bird. The bird just fell over - it was dead! The lady suffocated her own bird!!
